What Causes Black Mold Indoors?
The direct cause is excess moisture that is not corrected quickly enough. Mold spores are naturally present in indoor and outdoor air. They become a problem when they settle on damp materials such as drywall, wood, ceiling tiles, carpet backing, insulation, paper-faced materials, upholstery, or dust.
Many property owners focus on the spot they can see, but the source is often elsewhere. A stain on a ceiling may be fed by a roof leak, a plumbing line above it, condensation from an HVAC duct, or water that traveled through a wall cavity. Cleaning the surface without identifying and correcting the moisture source allows the problem to return.
1. Plumbing leaks and hidden water damage
Slow leaks are among the most common causes of indoor mold because they can remain unnoticed for weeks or months. A dripping supply line under a cabinet, a failing toilet seal, a leaking shower valve, or a loose appliance connection can wet building materials long before visible staining appears.

In many cases, however, the immediate need is clear: find the water source, contain the affected area if necessary, remove or clean contaminated materials using appropriate methods, and dry the structure completely.
The right response depends on the size of the affected area, the materials involved, whether water damage is ongoing, and who occupies the building. Mold in a small area on a nonporous surface may be manageable after the moisture source is corrected.
